Weekly Foreign Trade News——Bangladesh Plans to impose high import tariffs on computers

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has proposed to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Ministry of Finance to impose import duties on computers and notebooks in 2022-23 to boost the development of the local information and communication industry. The proposal also suggests a 5 percent tax credit for local manufacturers and zero tariff on imported basic components. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications said it wants a 25 percent tax gap between imported and locally made laptops so that it can promote local manufacturing and attract investment. Last year, the ministry proposed a 3.32 percent import tax on computers and laptops, which was also agreed to by the General Department of Taxation. Under current regulations, imported computers are not taxed.

Walton, a major local brand, already has 23 models of laptops, 13 models of desktops, 4 models of monitors and various models of keyboards and mice for gaming and standard use, as well as headphones. Its laptops are priced at Tk. 19,990-79,950 (about $1,533-$6,132). Products are also exported to Nigeria, Bhutan, Nepal and other countries.
